The village of West Union was laid out by a Mr. Haney in 1816, and for a time was known as Haneytown, it was later called West Union, and finally when a post office was established the offical name was Dallas. Rev. James Hervey began to preach in the school house in the autum of 1828. At first his audience consited of only ten or twelve hearers, but in a few years the congregation had greatly increased. Many of the settlers were of Scotch or Irish descent and were Presbyterians in their religious belief. Thus in 1830 the Dallas Presbyterian church was formed.
